Our Skip Hire Guide
1. Choosing the Right Skip Size
Before hiring a skip in Bradford, Leeds or Huddersfield, it’s important to select the right size based on the type and volume of waste you have. Here are some common skip sizes:
- Midi Skip (4 cubic yards): Great for medium-sized jobs like bathroom or kitchen renovations.
- Builder’s Skip (6-8 cubic yards): Suitable for larger construction projects or heavy waste such as soil and rubble.
- Large Skip (10-16 cubic yards): Perfect for major home clearances or larger building projects.
2. Permits and Regulations
In most cases, you may need a skip road permit from if you are placing the skip on public land, such as a road or footpath or grass verge. You may even wish to use a road permit for your skip if you want to keep your driveway clear. We can arrange a road permit for you. These do come at an extra cost and usually take 3-7 days to organise.
3. What Can Be Put Into a Skip?
A skip is a great solution for disposing of a wide variety of household and commercial waste. You can generally place the following items in your skip:
- General Household Waste: Solid wood , metal or plastic Furniture (no sofas, sofa chairs or any upholstered furniture. See here for more info) , clothing, shoes, packaging, plastics and toys.
- Garden Waste: Branches, soil, leaves, and grass cuttings, old sheds, fencing, bush trimmings, plants
- Home Renovations: Kitchen bathroom refits, Garage clearouts, general home refurbishments.
- Construction Materials: Bricks, wood, tiles, concrete, and rubble.
- Non-electrical Fixtures and Fittings: Doors, windows, and metal parts.
4. Items That Cannot Be Put Into a Skip
Certain hazardous or harmful items cannot be disposed of in a standard skip. These items need to be dealt with by specialist services to avoid environmental damage or safety hazards. Here’s a list of prohibited items:
- Asbestos (or any Asbestos looking waste): WE DO NOT ALLOW ASBESTOS. Requires special 3rd handling due to its health risks.
- Batteries: Both car and household batteries are harmful to the environment and need recycling.
- Upholstered Furniture: No Sofas, sofa chairs, cushions, futons, foot stools with padding. (See here for more information)
- Electrical Appliances (WEEE items): TVs, computers, fridges, freezers, Microwaves and other electrical goods must be disposed of through electronic waste recycling.
- Gas Cylinders and Canisters: Pressurized containers pose an explosion risk.
- Paints, Solvents and Oils: These can be toxic and hazardous to the environment.
- Plasterboard: Often restricted due to its potential to release harmful gases and expensive recycling costs.
- Chemicals and Pesticides: Must be disposed of via specialist hazardous waste services.
- Tyres: Need to be recycled separately due to their non-biodegradable nature.
- Medical Waste: Syringes, bandages, or pharmaceutical products require specific disposal methods.
- Oil, Petrol, and Diesel: Must be disposed of properly due to flammability.
- Fluorescent Tubes: Contain mercury and are harmful if broken.
5. Tips for Efficient Skip Hire
- Break down large items to maximize space.
- Organize your waste to optimize the loading process.
- Do not overfill the skip beyond the top of the skip. We advise our customers to ‘level load’ our skips to ensure safe transport back to our waste management site in Leeds. Additional ‘Wasted journey charges’ will apply if a skip cannot be collected from site because it is overloaded or there is no access to the skip upon collection.
6. Environmental Responsibility
Responsible waste management in Bradford is crucial for reducing landfill use and protecting the environment. By using our skip hire service in West Yorkshire, you ensure that your waste is properly sorted and recycled whenever possible.
7. Conclusion
Hiring a skip is a convenient way to manage waste, but it’s essential to understand the regulations and restrictions that come with it. Make sure you choose the right size, follow local guidelines, and be mindful of prohibited items to ensure a smooth and responsible waste disposal process.
